7-keto dehydroepiandrosterone (7-keto DHEA) is a metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Dehydroepiandrosterone is the most abundant adrenal hormone as a precursor of sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. Researchers have found in animal and test tube experiments that it can act on immune regulation, memory enhancement and heat generation. In all experiments, 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone was stronger than dehydroepiandrosterone.
In a double{{0}}blind trial, 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone was found to have the effect of weight loss. In this experiment, participants were advised to exercise three times a day for 45 minutes, while eating 1800 calories a day. All took placebo or 100 mg of 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone every day. After 8 weeks, those taking 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone lost an average of 6.34 pounds, while those taking placebo lost an average of 2.13 pounds. In addition, body fat decreased by about 1.8 percent in the 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone group and only 0.57 percent in the placebo group. 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone may be responsible for weight loss by increasing T3 (thyroid hormone, regulating human metabolic function), although T3 levels in the blood do not exceed the normal range.
Are there side effects and drug interactions?
In human trials, it was found that taking 200 mg of 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone daily for 8 weeks did not increase estrogen or testosterone levels, nor did it produce other side effects. Short term animal experiments have confirmed that taking large doses of 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone will not produce side effects. However, the long-term safety needs to be further confirmed. Because its chemical properties are similar to steroid hormones, it may have potential side effects. In addition, elevated T3 levels theoretically lead to the loss of cardiac load or stubbornness. Therefore, consult your doctor before supplementation, especially those with thyroid dysfunction or taking thyroid hormones.
So far, the interaction between 7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone and other drugs is unclear.
